Title
I’m passionate about human rights and sexual, relationship and reproductive choices for all people.
I believe in bodily autonomy; the rights of people to identify their own gender, make their relationships or not (gay, polyamorous, paid, open, parenting, BDSM, asexual, etc) without fear of discrimination or criminal repercussions. Pregnant people retain their own bodily autonomy and just laws should reflect that right. And ultimately, all people have a right to end their own life, and a just health care system provides legal pain-free support for that choice. Freedom of and from religion and separation of church and state are essential prerequisites to these human rights.
And of course, for human beings to enjoy these rights, we have a responsibility to the planet and the infinite other beings it supports. Failure to take care of the planet and other life on the planet makes all other work meaningless. To that end, meaningfully addressing climate change and biodiversity and ensuring sustainable existence must underlie everything.
Finally, I acknowledge the privilege I have to live and work in Brisbane (Meanjin), Queensland, Australia. Within a commitment to reconciliation and respect, I acknowledge the Turrbal People as the traditional owners of this land.
My current research
I am grateful to be the recipient of an Australian federal research and training scholarship (2018-2021) to work on a PhD in the School of Public Health at the University of Queensland.
I plan to conduct qualitative, participatory research about the experiences of older female sex workers (>50 years) in Queensland, Australia. With a great sex worker advisory panel and three inspiring supervisors, Linda Selvey, Lisa Fitzgerald, and Judith Dean what could go wrong?
Sex worker rights
Sex work exists in each continent and country, and have done so for time immemorial. Sex workers are diverse in age, gender, nationality, religion (or none), level of education and economic circumstances. Their reasons for choosing sex work are also diverse.
Sex work is work, I acknowledge the agency of each person to choose their work — and the rights of their clients to seek the services of sex workers. And all without without shame or stigma, without criminalisation and without violence. I stand behind the Consensus Statement of the Global Network of Sex Work Projects, an umbrella organisation that represents over 200 sex worker led organisations across the world.
